Qatar Airways still mulling over possible CSeries order

Qatar Airways LogoPress reports have indicated that Qatar Airways is continuing negotiations with Bombardier which may lead to the eventual purchase by the airline of Bombardier’s CSeries aircraft.

At one time, Qatar Airways was held as being the CSeries launch customer, but this did not come to fruition due to concerns of the airline over maintenance costs with the Pratt & Whitney PW1500G engines powering the aircraft type.

Qatar ordered the Airbus A319neo instead, but the airline has confirmed in interviews that it still has an interest in the CSeries for itself and its leasing company. A final decision with regards to a CSeries purchase is expected in the near future, no later than May 2013.

PLUNA Líneas Aéreas Uruguayas S.A., more popularly known as PLUNA, was the flag carrier of Uruguay. The airline’s hub was in Carrasco, Montevideo, and operated scheduled services within South America in the late 2000s before it closed. The airline was founded in 1936 and operated until 2012 when, under government ownership, it ceased to exist due to financial issues and labor disputes. At the time, the airline operated exclusively CRJ-900 NextGen aircraft on regional routes and also had a codeshare agreement with Iberia to allow for overseas connections.

All of these aircraft were delivered directly from Bombardier to PLUNA as new aircraft. While there was a overall basic colour scheme to the fleet, there were colour variations between each aircraft and the bird theme also varied. Upon the airline’s closure, all CRJs were  stored at Montevideo Carrasco airport in Uruguay.

As of September 2012, stored at Montevideo Carrasco airport in Uruguay waiting on a government auction of PLUNA’s assets to occur. The initial auction was cancelled, but at a second auction on October 1st, 2012, Cosmo Airlines, a Spanish charter airline, purchased seven of the CRJ-900s with the intention to operate them in Europe. The CRJs purchased in the auction were: CX-CRA, CX-CRB, CX-CRC, CX-CRD, CX-CRE, CX-CRF and CX-CRG.

Before the airline ceased operations, PLUNA held options for two CRJ-900s that were never delivered. The airline also was considering CRJ-200s for shorter less popular routes but that concept never left the planning stage with the airline. Previous to the CRJ-200, PLUNA had previously considered the Bombardier Q400 (DHC-8Q-400) in this role.

  • MSN 7006
  • C-GRJO, D-ACLC, XA-UHB, 5Y-JLB
  • Sixth Canadair Regional Jet Built
  • Operated for Lufthansa Cityline, ALMA de Mexico, Jetlink Air, Rwandair and Marsland Aviation.
  • Originally a RJ100ER, converted to RJ100LR and then RJ200LR configuration.

Aircraft History

C-GRJO, 7006, was the sixth Canadair Regional Jet built and began its service life with Lufthansa Cityline. 7005 was delivered as D-ACLC and was configured as a RJ100ER aircraft.  All CRJs in Cityline’s first order were to be registered in the D-ACL series. Like other members of the CityLine CRJ fleet, 7006 underwent an update to the RJ100LR configuration and then the RJ200LR configuration in October 2005.

The aircraft flew in various Lufthansa titles as did all of the CityLine CRJ fleet during their service. 7006 was withdrawn from service in 2006 and then returned to Bombardier. The aircraft was stored for a time with Bombardier before being leased on to ALMA de Mexico for a short period of time as XA-UHB. After the collapse of ALMA, 7006 was sold to Jetlink Air who registered 7006 as 5Y-JLB and subleased 7006 to Rwandair and Marsland Aviation. As of September 2012, 7006 still operates with Jetlink Air in their colour scheme.
