Aircraft History

C-GVRJ, 7003, was the third Canadair Regional Jet built. The aircraft spent most of its early life with Canadair in a public relations role painted in the distinctive Canadair house colour scheme. The aircraft visited every continent at least once during its service with Canadair before moving to a route proving role with Lufthansa Cityline and then was sold to Air Littoral in 1993, who operated 7003 for the majority of its life.

Initially, 7003 was painted in an all white colour scheme with Air Littoral titles and emblem on an all white tail. Then in 1995, 7003 was painted into Air France / Air Inter Express colours. When the aircraft was sub-leased to Southern Winds in 1998, 7003 was repainted into a white fuselage colour scheme with Southern Winds titles and logo on the tail with a blue background. Post lease with Southern Winds in 2000, 7003 was painted into Air France colours with small Air Littoral markings. The final colour scheme for 7003 was all white with larger Air Littoral titles on the upper front of the fuselage which lasted for the rest of its airline service.

7003 retired from airline service in August 2004 with Air Littoral and then was ferried to North Bay Ontario where the aircraft was scrapped in June of 2006.

Rumours of Firefly Airlines considering DHC-8Q-400s and ATR72s

Firefly Airlines LogoThe regional subsidiary of Malaysia Airlines, called Firefly, is investigating, according to reports, a fleet purchase program with the goal of reequipping it’s turboprop fleet. The airline currently operates with ATR72-500 aircraft regionally after the airline ceased operating jet equipment.

One report indicated that a type decision had not been made, but that ATR72 and DHC-8-Q400 aircraft were under consideration. No firm decision is expected before the first quarter of 2013 and possibly later in the year.

Skywest to operate CRJ-200s for American Airlines

SkyWest LogoSkyWest Airlines announced on September 12th, 2012 that an agreement had been reached with American Airlines to operate 23 Bombardier CRJ200 regional jet aircraft under the American Eagle designation.

SkyWest plans to operate the first CRJ flight for American Eagle on November 15, 2012, with all 23 aircraft being in service prior to end of the first quarter 2013.

It is likely that the majority of the CRJs to be transferred to American Eagle service will be ex-Delta Connection aircraft that have been removed from Skywest’s agreement with Delta. 12 CRJs will be flown by SkyWest and 11 CRJs will be flown by ExpressJet. Skywest indicated that the CRJs will be mainly flying from Los Angeles International Airport and Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.

The capacity purchase agreement with American Airlines has a term of four years. SkyWest currently operates regional jets for Delta Connection, United Express and Alaska Airlines and US Airways Express.
